September 1, 2008: "Jennie Garth: "Beverly Hills, 90210" Was Worse Than High School"
Jennie Garth says starring in "Beverly Hills, 90210" was "worse than high school." The blonde beauty admits the rivalry on set was almost unbearable.
She said: "There were times when being in the show was worse than high school. The environment there was like, 'Are you kidding me?' There was a lot of tension and unnecessary drama on the set, a certain amount of competition, and a certain, probably, anger about different salaries as the years progressed."
"People would find out how much someone was making, and then they'd be angry and want that, or if you got days off in your contract, they'd want that. Nobody was brave enough to step in and set us straight, and have a serious talk with us about it. There was a lot of tension directed from one specific person, and that one specific person had to reap the consequences from that."
Jennie also revealed she developed agoraphobia, the fear of wide open spaces, while appearing on the show.
She added to The New York Times newspaper: "I started to develop whatever it is when you won't leave the house. That kind of phobia. I just started to really get a little freaked out by it all. I felt like everyone was always looking at me."
August 21, 2008: "Jennie Garth Says Working Again With Shannen Doherty After 14 Years Isn't As Bad As She Thought"
Jennie Garth says working with Shannen Doherty "isn't as bad" as she expected.
The two actresses reprise their roles as Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh respectively in the new "Beverly Hills 90210" spin-off, and after a previously rocky relationship Jennie admits she was initially uneasy about working with the "Charmed" star again.
She told America's TV Guide magazine: "It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm not much of a small talker, and I don't think she is either. I was a little nervous because I hadn't seen or talked to her in 14 years."
"Everyone was making it out to be such a big deal that I think we both fell prey to having that affect us."
"I think it will be OK. We're both grown women, both professionals. Once we were working, it felt like a good fit."
Co-star Ryan Eggold revealed the cast and crew were worried about how the two women would get on.
He said: "Everybody was on pins and needles and sort of waiting to see how they'd react. They started off kind of tentative, but by the time we were five takes in, they were giggling and seemed to be reconnecting."
Jennie also spoke of her sadness that Tori Spelling had pulled out of reprising her role as Donna Martin in the show.
Saying she was encouraging fans to launch a "Bring Back Donna Martin" campaign, Jennie added: "I know Shannen probably doesn't share the feelings that I have for Tori, but I love Tori like my sister."
Meanwhile, Tori - whose late father Aaron produced the original show - has spoken of her wish for the new program to succeed.
Saying she will definitely be watching, she told radio host Ryan Seacrest: "I hope it turns out to be a really great show, just for my dad's legacy. I was originally a part of and it was something pretty phenomenal, so I hope it turns out great."
